Optical Polarimetry for Fundamental Physics

Sensitive magneto-optical polarimetry was proposed by E. Iacopini and Zavattini in 1979 to detect vacuum electrodynamic non-linearity, particular Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence (VMB). This process is predicted QED via the fluctuation of electron–positron virtual pairs but can also be due hypothetical Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) and/or MilliCharged (MCP). Today ALPs are considered a strong candidate for Dark Matter. Starting 1992 PVLAS collaboration, financed INFN, Italy, attempted measure VMB conceptually following original scheme based on an optical cavity permeated time-dependent magnetic field heterodyne detection. Two setups followed differing basically magnet: first using rotating superconducting 5.5 T dipole magnet at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy second two permanent 2.5 magnets INFN section Ferrara. At present experiment which has set best limit reaching noise floor within factor 7 signal: ?n(QED)=2.5×10?23 @ T. It shown that larger only solution increase signal ratio. The ended end 2018. A new effort, VMB@CERN, plans use spare LHC CERN with modified scheme, now being proposed. In this review, detailed description effort comprehension its limits leading proposal will given.
